At RedStone, We’re taking the “LEED” in sustainability.
Have you ever thought about what happens to all the concrete rubble and construction waste that’s created when a building is torn down and hauled off? Probably not. But a long time ago, we realized that hauling everything away to a landfill is wasteful, especially considering how much can be recycled. So, we made a decision to do something about it.
What we did was commit RedStone Construction Group to be the first road contractor in the Central Arkansas area to fully integrate recycled materials into our everyday products, a move that has paid off in numerous ways for our clients, our company, and our home. To this day, our commitment to sustainability is unrivaled in the industry.
We’re also proud to incorporate the principles of the LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) program into all of our projects. The LEED program was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) to encourage environmental responsibility and efficient use of natural resources in construction and maintenance of buildings, homes, and neighborhoods. Each year we’re able to keep over 3,000 dump truck loads of solid waste out of our landfills, and by recycling and repurposing building materials, we’re helping our clients reduce their carbon footprint. Here’s a quick look at the ways that we repurpose construction waste:
Asphalt – We repurpose thousands of tons of asphalt waste annually, and we recycle roofing shingles from over 1,500 homes to create new asphalt. The shingles that are on your home today could be part of the road that you drive on tomorrow. Up to 40% of our new asphalt is made from recycled materials, and our warm mix asphalt requires 14% less fuel and emissions. Recycled asphalt is good for the environment, and it also means savings for our clients.
Concrete Recycling – Concrete waste is delivered to our Little Rock quarry, where it’s processed for use in mixing new concrete, or producing road base. Once the steel and rebar are removed, our machinery crushes the rubble, and it’s put to use right away.
At RedStone, we believe that we don’t inherit the earth from our parents, but borrow it from our children. We’re able to repurpose 99% of asphalt and concrete waste into new products, and we take a lot of pride in our ongoing commitment to sustainability.
