For new graduates, the job market can be tough and intimidating– no matter which field you’re hoping to get into.
The construction industry is no exception. Although plenty of construction companies are seeking workers, it can still be a little tricky to find a job that suits you and your skillset perfectly– while allowing you to support yourself and your family.
We’re here to shed some light on the process and help you get your foot in the door.
Develop a strategy
Many jobs within the construction industry are highly competitive. You’ll need to prove that you stand out from the crowd in order to get noticed by the companies you really want to work for.
For just about any position in any industry, one of the very most important things you can do to further your career is to build relationships.
In the construction industry, this means you’ll need to get creative in order to showcase how you’ll be an asset to the company in ways that other people simply can’t offer.
Before you start out on your journey to find a job, you should have specific goals in mind, and a realistic understanding of your strengths, limitations, and interests. What makes you different from other candidates?
Marketing 101
It may help to think of yourself as a company of sorts. How are you marketing yourself? What image are you projecting with your resume, cover letters, and references?
If you’re interested in a certain company, scrutinize their website, their social media presence, and check out their employees on LinkedIn. Take note of their tone of voice and the way they market themselves, and think about how you could adapt your resume and cover letter to complement their strategy.
Part of branding yourself nowadays is optimizing your resume and LinkedIn for the AI algorithms that many large companies use to automatically sort through resumes.
If you’re responding to a job listing posted online, read the listing very carefully. Notice what words they use, and what skills they mention by name. Then, make sure to include those words and skills on your resume.
Of course, you shouldn’t say that you have skills that you don’t actually possess– the point here is to make sure that the skills you do have will be picked up by the algorithm. Most likely, if your resume isn’t formatted to include the right keywords, it may never make it into the inbox or onto the desk of a real person.
Prepare for the interview
Job interviews can be intimidating, especially for a position that you really want.
Make sure that you’re fully prepared for your interview by doing as much research about the company and position as possible.
This is a good time to network– check on LinkedIn to see if any alumni from your university are currently employed at the company you’re applying at. Reach out to them and ask them about the position. Chances are good that someone will be willing to give you some extra information or even put in a good word for you. You’ll never know if you don’t try!
